Doug Fieger (1952-2010)

Douglas Lars Fieger, better known as Doug Fieger, was an American rock musician and the older brother of renowned trial attorney Geoffrey Fieger. While Geoffrey made his mark in the courtroom, Doug found his calling on stage as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the power pop band The Knack.

Musical Career

Doug Fieger achieved international fame in 1979 when The Knack released their debut album Get the Knack, which became one of the year's best-selling records. The album's lead single became a worldwide phenomenon, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and selling over 6 million copies.

The Knack became known for their energetic power pop sound, drawing comparisons to early Beatles with their catchy melodies and tight musicianship. Despite the massive success of their debut, the band faced the challenge of following up such an extraordinary breakthrough.

The Fieger Brothers

The Fieger brothers grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in a family that valued both intellectual pursuit and creative expression. While Geoffrey pursued law at the University of Michigan, Doug followed his passion for music, eventually forming The Knack in Los Angeles in 1978.

Despite their different career paths, the brothers shared:

  • Detroit roots and strong family values
  • Fierce determination and competitive spirit
  • A refusal to back down from challenges
  • High-profile public careers
  • The courage to face criticism and controversy

Later Years and Legacy

Doug Fieger continued performing and recording with The Knack through various reunions and lineup changes. The band released several albums over the decades, maintaining a loyal fan base.

In 2006, Doug was diagnosed with cancer. He faced his illness with the same determination that characterized his music career, continuing to perform when possible. He passed away on February 14, 2010, at age 57.

Remembering Doug

Geoffrey Fieger has spoken publicly about his brother's influence and legacy, noting Doug's passion for music and his refusal to compromise his artistic vision. The Fieger family's impact on American culture—Geoffrey through landmark legal cases and Doug through iconic rock music—represents two different paths to leaving a lasting mark.

Doug Fieger's contribution to rock and roll history, particularly the power pop genre, continues to influence musicians today. His songs remain radio staples and his band's debut album is considered a classic of late 1970s rock.
